Clinton Attacking Fred Again
Sep 10th, 2007 by Ted Pibil
You must really ask yourself why Clinton affiliates continue to attack Fred Thompson? Giuliani is the front runner right now, so why do they attack Senator Thompson? My only conclusion is that they are afraid of running against him because they know they can beat Giuliani.
Yesterday, the pro-Clinton New York Times, published a vague story, fed to them by Clinton-affiliated law firm Arent Fox, about when Thompson was a lawyer he was consulted by John Culver. Culver, a former Democratic senator from Iowa and partner at Arent Fox, was representing the Libyan government after the Lockerbie plane bombing.
Culver admits that “Mr. Thompson was not a primary member of his team, and that his contribution amounted to “a couple of conversations.” Those conversations amounted to 3.3 hours. We do not know what was discussed, but the NY Times just wants to make a connection between Thompson and Libya (or anything negative). Thompson could have very well told their lawyer to turn over the bombers.
What we do know is the following:
Fred Thompson has an eight year record in the Senate of being unrelenting toward Libya and its activities.
He supported the “Iran and Libya Sanctions Act of 1996” and the Act’s extension in 2001. (H.R. 3107, 104th; S. 1218, 107th)
He also supported the “Iran Nonproliferation Act” in 2000. (H.R. 1883, 106th)
And he supported a Senate resolution in 2000 that specifically stated that “the travel ban and all other U.S. restrictions on Libya should not be eased until all cases of American victims of Libyan terrorism have been resolved and the Government of Libya has cooperated fully in bringing the perpetrators to justice.” (S. Res. 287, 106th)
Furthermore, Fred Thompson was the lead sponsor of the “China Nonproliferation Act,” which specifically addressed concerns about China and other countries supplying weapons of mass destruction to Libya.
In addition, each year a prohibition on direct access or reparations for Libya was included in the Foreign Operations Appropriations bill.
Fred Thompson’s Government Affairs Committee held multiple hearings in 2000, 20001, and 2002 on the ballistic missile threat, WMD proliferation, and the effect of loose export controls on rogue countries like Libya:
