Fred Thompson has received the endorsement today of Houston, Texas Judge Paul Pressler, a former Texas Court of Appelas Judge. What makes this endorsement VERY significant is that Judge Pressler is widely known within the Southern Baptist Convention as the man who planned the conservative resurgence within the nation’s largest Protestant Denomination.
I am a Southern Baptist myself, and I can say that Judge Pressler is one of the most respected voices in the denomination among conservatives. The Southern Baptist Convention was headed in a leftward, liberal direction in the late 1970’s. Judge Pressler led a movement that began to tell the truth about the liberal drift in the denomination. As a result, in 1979, conservatives rose up and began to elect leaders who were conservative and not liberal. The denomination has been led by conservatives ever since. It is the only known instance of a major denomination headed in a liberal drift that has corrected course and moved back in the conservative direction. Judge Pressler had a lot to do with that happening.
The fact that Judge Pressler has looked over all the candidates, including fellow Southern Baptist Mike Huckabee, and decided to endorse Fred Thompson will speak volumes to the millions of Southern Baptists across the nation. Fred should be very proud to receive this endorsement, and it will have an impact in states like South Carolina, Florida and others in the Bible Belt.
